Beautiful butterflies

I love butterflies. They are difficult to image, but here’s some I came across anyway!

Interestingly, their pupa are only found on the tropical plant species “Senna occidentalis” and no other.

Called the African queen/plain tiger (female/male), this butterfly species is believed to be the first ones depicted in art. A 3500-year-old Egyptian painting in Luxor features the oldest known illustration of this beautiful thing!

Another interesting thing is that because they are unpleasant to taste, their bright coloration serves as a warning to predators that they are either distasteful or toxic. Combined with the deceiving mechanisms (eye spots), it allows for efficient survival.
